Elite Dangerous featured a significant update on the 25th October called Guardians. This update featured numerous changes to the gameplay and refreshed Elite for players.

New features included the Beluga Liner, essentially a space ocean liner in Elite. This allows players to purchase numerous passenger cabins and transport individuals and the rewards are usually in the millions for these missions. These types of missions are dependent on the rank the player holds with individual space stations. So if you are allied with any space stations, or even friendly you shall have access to the higher paying passenger missions. Some missions require transport a mere 100 light years and rewards can be up to 6+ million. The Beluga is not the only ship that can hold passenger cabins, in fact many other vessels have this feature. I recommend players go for the first class cabin as these tend to be the higher paying missions.  Explorer rank is also vital to these missions, so if this area has been neglected quickly make 7 million from scan data and get to a higher rank. Some missions however have certain glitches unfortunately right now but these are being corrected. The notorious one is the wanted passengers who cause stations to destroy you if you are scanned. This is being corrected but avoid these missions until the patch has dropped. A mission I have currently selected requires me to travel to Colonia, 21,000 light years away but I make 82 million from this. Not only that I also make money from my exploration data so I can expect a profit of 100+ million upon my return.

Combat in Elite has also been improved. Now the larger vessels, such as: Anaconda, Beluga Liner, Federal Corvette & Gunship, Imperial Cutter, Keelback and Type 9 Heavy allow you to install a fighter bay module. This module allows you to have a limited number of fighter bays on your vessel. This module is also equipped to create a limited number and also repair these fighters. There are three fighters available in the game. The Taipan Fighter, which has the most shield and armor. The F63 Condor is the fastest, and the Imperial Fighter is the most maneuverable. Each of these fighters are available in five variants to meet your different play styles. With this new feature the crew lounge comes into play. At Space stations you are able to buy a crew mate to come serve with you. They each have their own back story, and they come at many different ranks. The higher the rank, the more cut they take from your profits, although the better they perform. It is also possible to purchase lower ranking crew members and rank them up alongside you. Either way this feature has some variety and makes gameplay that much more interesting.

The update also introduced alien ruins which are slowly being integrated into the game. First it was the unknown alien artifacts, illegal goods but worth a considerable fortune. Now the developers have included numerous planets with ruins that hold valuable goods. For anyone interested in viewing these ruins and obtaining some very valuable cargo here is the location. System name Synuefe XR-H d11-102, Planet 1b and the coordinates -128.9/-31.8. Another lovely addition is that now the interior of space stations reflect the economy of the system they are housed in. Space stations in star systems with a refinery based economy show sections of the interior where forges are active and smelting material. Star systems with a technology based economy are much more high tech on the inside. These little updates break the repetitiveness of the game and make it far more interesting to engage in now.

Another major part of this update was the overhaul of graphics for White dwarfs and Neutron Stars. Both of these are now visually impressive, but more importantly is the supercharged plasma jets they release into space. These jets allow the player to supercharge their fsd drive and jump further for one single jump at the cost of 1% damage to the fsd drive usually. It is a risky thing to do as you must fly into these jets and your ship will then be under gravitation forces causing you to lose control if not careful. It is best to essentially “kiss” the jets and immediately leave them. For a ship with a 29 light year jump range, you could jump as far as 117 light years depending on the star used. Neutron stars provide a jump increase of 300% hence the previous jump range going from 29 to 117. White dwarfs however provide an increase of 25% but are safer to supercharge from.

The Elite Dangerous Guardians update is a much needed breath of fresh air to the series. It has changed the gameplay by a significant amount. NPC’s are now deadlier and not just simple credit gaining targets and you need to shoot to earn your bounties. I would rate this update a good 7.5/10 for how it has improved the game. Much deserved attention is to the passenger missions that offer serious money to even low ranking players. Thus allowing them to gain profits to access higher class ships.
