Let’s talk about CoD

When it comes to FPS games, one of the major players is the Call of Duty series. With millions of copies sold for over a decade it is one of the most successful franchises ever and millions of fans on all platforms. The upcoming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare received a highly controversial welcoming from the CoD community.

The beginning of the end?

I highly doubt it. However Infinity Ward received a massive blow from the fan reaction to the game trailer. It is the most disliked video on YouTube, throughout the YouTube history with more than 3 million dislikes and if that was not enough the E3 gameplay reveal during the Sony Press Conference was received with the same feeling, that it is not good enough.

But why are fans turning their backs to the new game? Well first of all I think that the series has followed a path with Sci-Fi warfare which has nothing to do with the successful line of games in the past. I can raise my hand and say that I used to be a hardcore CoD fan, after Modern Warfare 3 though the series tried to bring innovation in the series and somewhere in the process it lost me as well as thousands of others.

Advanced Warfare was in my honest opinion the worst CoD they ever made. It was an ambitious effort to bring something revolutionary with the EXO suits, but it really sucked. It did not resemble the good old CoD in any way, players where bouncing on and off the map, it was bad. Very bad. The problem here is though, that instead of getting the feedback and listening to the fans Black Ops 3 came out, which is a Sci-Fi FPS based in the future with EXO suits, with Robots, droids and futuristic stuff but due to the previous success of the Black Ops series it received a warm welcome and a lot of people tried they really tried to give it a go and enjoy it.

And a couple of weeks before E3, we sit in front of our screens to witness the reveal of Infinite Warfare. And not only it was yet another Sci-Fi FPS based in the future, they took the next title to space. Hello? Is there anybody listening in Activision and Infinity Ward? Haven’t you heard to listen to the fans?

Unfortunately it can. They decided that remastering the CoD4: Modern Warfare and giving it alongside Infinite Warfare would be a great addition. But all great things come with a great price. And for a game that was first released in 2007, 9 years ago it is too much. It is not a new game, it is remastered. Yet again, I would highly recommend that they had released them separately, because fans would be more willing to play a really good game again. The price tag though shows me one thing, that little studio that was making great games back then in 2003 has evolved. It has evolved into a corporate run business that is seeking to maximize profit, they do not listen to the fans even though deep in its core values I think there are a lot of true CoD fans that want to turn this ship around before it crashes.

Let’s not forget one thing. That in the year 2016 Internet is a really cruel environment. Many people see that there are a lot of dislikes, they dislike as well. Just to go with the flow. I have no doubt that Infinite Warfare will sell really good and will be success in terms of Euros and Dollars. But the glass has cracked, there needs to be a turn to the good old grounded times before it is too late. Go ahead Activision, forget all that futuristic shit and give us a good ol’ story we can share with our grand kids.
